What is instrumentation in project management?

Instrumentation in project management or process instrumentation is a holistic approach where sensors, monitors, and various other instruments are used together to make an eco-system that maintains process control for improved production. 

What is Process Instrumentation?

Process instrumentation is a collective term used for describing the branch of engineering that studies various types of instruments that record, monitor, and control various physical parameters such as temperatures, pressure, pH, value, level, etc in a process.

The function of instrumentation in a process plant is to gather intelligence from the operating plant and control the process as per predefined conditions. It mainly helps in measuring various process conditions like pressure, temperature, flow, density, and level. 

What is the process of control instrumentation?

The methodology of process instrumentation is divided into eight distinct stages. Each of these is elaborated below. 

Step 1: Primary Measurement 

The quantity under measurement, also known as the “measurand,” is captured as input and considered the primary sensing element. 

Step 2: Transducing 

In case the primary sensing element has a non-electrical input, it is converted into an electrical signal through a Trandsducer. This is a device that converts energy from one form to another. 

Step 3: Signal Conditioning

Once the inputs are in the right condition, they are passed through a signal conditioner that converts the output of the transducer into a quantity suitable for the next block. 

There are multiple processes involved in this step, such as rectification, modulation, and so forth. 

Also, note that either transducing or signal conditioning is required after the primary sensing; both are not performed on the same measurand. 

Step 4: Variable Conversion

Even after going through three steps often, electrical signals might require conversion. For example, if the inputs are in analog format and the next stage only accepts digital format, then in that case, an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) would be required. 

Step 5: Variable Manipulation 

In this step, the signals are further manipulated to make them acceptable and suitable for the next stage. For that, it might amplify or mellow down the signals to match the required levels. 

Step 6: Data Transmission  

The next step is data transmission, which is crucial when the elements of an instrument are physically separated. To do this, tools known as data transmission element is used. 

Step 7: Data Displaying 

In this step, the quantity under measurement is displayed in a suitable format (e.g., digital or analog), which can be easily understood by the operator or observer. 

Step 8:  Element Controlling 

If the process cycle is decided to be automated, then a control device will be equipped at this step, which takes feedback to its input system.
