Smart Plant Instrumentation (SPI) Intools

What are Smart Plant Instrumentation (SPI) Intools?

Smartplant instrumentation (SPI) Intools is an advanced instrumentation engineering database developed by Intergraph (now known as Hexagon PPM). Smartplant instrumentation helps in accessing and updating a wide range of instruments that are used in a plant.

It is a software solution that enables plants to increase their efficiency while lowering their operating costs. The software centralizes the instrumentation data to maintain records and standardize procedures and automate future processes.

How does SPI work?

The project execution by SPIs is performed in multiple steps. Executing each of these in a systematic way makes the engineering deliverables better. Hence improving the overall functioning of the plant.

SPI utilizes a module-oriented environment, and those are-

  • Process module: Under this module, process data is collected from smartplant P&ID, then edited and added to the dataset’s instrument designs section, wherever needed.
  • Instrument index module: In this module, the software recalls and expands the rule base of the instrument designs and gathers information regarding the P&ID.
  • Specification module: In this module, the system creates a data sheet/ specifications that comprise smartplant instrumentation data along with data coming from vendotrs.
  • Wiring module: lastly, the wiring module includes elements like junction boxes, marshaling cabinets, and wiring data scripts, and the task is to loop check for connectivity. It is the part where electrical synchronization takes place.

What is the use of Intools?

The primary purpose of InTools is to streamline and automate the design and documentation process, but here’s an elaboration of some key uses and features of it.

1. Making instrument index

InTools allows users to create and maintain a centralized database known as the instrument index. This index contains detailed information about each instrument used in the plant, including its specifications, tag number, location, and other relevant data.

2. Creating instrument specific sheets

The software facilitates the creation of instrument specification sheets, which provide detailed information about the requirements and specifications of each instrument. This includes information such as the instrument type, range, accuracy, materials of construction, and other relevant parameters.

3. Creating instrument loop diagrams

InTools enables the creation of instrument loop diagrams, which depict the interconnections between instruments, control systems, and field devices in a graphical format. These diagrams help engineers understand the overall control and monitoring architecture of the plant.

4. Generating wiring and termination diagram

The software allows for the generation of wiring and termination diagrams, which illustrate the physical wiring connections between instruments and control panels. This helps in the installation and commissioning of the instrumentation systems.

5. Maintaining data consistency and integrity

InTools ensures data consistency and integrity throughout the design process. It helps prevent errors and discrepancies by automatically checking for inconsistencies between various documents and data sets, minimizing the risk of costly mistakes during construction and operation.

6. Facilitating collaboration and reporting

The software facilitates collaboration among different teams involved in the design process. It enables multiple users to work simultaneously on different aspects of the project, and it provides reporting features that allow users to generate various documentation, such as instrument datasheets, loop diagrams, and reports.
